Speaker: Liz Carpenter

|
Liz
Carpenter has had a long
career in politics and writing.
Carpenter, born in Salado, Texas,
started her career as a political journalist covering the Franklin
D. Roosevelt White House for the Austin American-Statesman.
She became a speechwriter for Lyndon B. Johnson while he was Vice
President, most notably drafting the 58 words used by Johnson upon
his return to Washington after the assassination of President
Kennedy.
During the LBJ administration, she
served as press secretary and chief of staff for Lady Bird Johnson.
Carpenter later became active in the women's movement. She helped
found the Texas Women's Political Caucus in 1971, and traveled the
country campaigning for the Equal Rights Amendment. She is also
well-known for her sharp and ever present wit.
In 1983, The University of Texas
Board of Regents established the Liz Carpenter Lectureship. The
lecture series has brought such distinguished speakers as Maya
Angelou, Gerald Ford, and Bill Clinton to the university.
Carpenter is also the author of
many magazine articles and five books, including Getting Better
all the Time, Start with a Laugh, and Unplanned
Parenthood: Confessions of a Seventy-Something Surrogate Mother.
She continues to write, and remains a sought-after public speaker. |

The
life
of
Patsy
Ellis
Roach
was
truly
a
testimony
to
the
high
ideal
expressed
in
the
creed
of
Zeta
Tau
Alpha
that
"love
is
the
greatest
of
all
things."
Throughout
her
short
years,
Patsy
was
a
loving
daughter,
sister,
wife,
mother,
teacher,
volunteer
and
friend.
Her
sweet
and
caring
spirit
was
filled
with
love
for
her
family,
her
friends,
her
sorority
sisters
and
her
community.
In
turn,
she
was
beloved
by
all
who
knew
her.
Patsy's
laugh
was
infectious
and
her
enthusiasm
boundless.
When
she
was
diagnosed
with
breast
cancer,
she
knew
it
was
a
challenge
she
would
meet.
She
faced
her
fears
with
an
optimistic
determination
which
gave
hope
to
her
family
and
friends.
The
prognosis
for
her
future
was
excellent.
After
her
precious,
valiant
life
was
shortened
by
a
senseless,
violent
death,
the
grief
of
family
and
friends
became
an
expression
of
love
when
they
founded
a
scholarship
fund
in
her
memory.
Contributions
began
pouring
in
from
those
whose
life
she
touched
and
the
Patsy
Ellis
Roach
Scholarship
Fund
was
established.
The
scholarship
is
given
to
a
qualified
member
of
the
Gamma
Psi
Chapter
of
Zeta
Tau
Alpha
as
Texas
Christian
University.
Qualifications
are
based
on
love
and
service
commitment
to
sisters,
friends
and
other
members
of
the
TCU
and
Fort
Worth
communities,
academic
dedication
and
demonstrated
need.
